Meine Route von Cuhiayipi führte weiter in den Süden auf der Careterra Austra. bis Villa o Higgins.

Die Landschaft wurde zunehmend einsamer, die Dörfer weiter auseinander und kleiner. Die Lebensmittelpreise stiegen wegen den langen Entfernungen auch weiter an. Die Bergspitzen sind nun alle schneebedeckt. Bei den jetzigen Temperaturen von 10-20 Grad und 14 Stunden Sonnenschein kann man sich gar nicht vorstellen, wie es hier bei Minus 20 Grad und 7 Stunden Licht ist.

Die Dörfer sind hier so klein, dass sich alle Bewohner kennen und die Gegenden sind so abgelegen, dass man zusammenhalten muss. Hier in Tortel streitet man sich höchstens einmal über Hunde, die Hühner auffressen. Dann wird eine Entschädigung gezahlt und die Welt ist wieder im Lot.

Tortel wurde vor 50 Jahren als Holzfällersiedlung am Ende eines Fjordes gebaut. Statt Straßen gibt es hier ein Netz von Holzstegen, vielen Treppen und das ganze Dorf ist aus Holz gebaut. Durch den Holzexport wurde nur der Großhändler reich und die Dörfler schufteten für kleines Geld. Heute wird immer noch Holz geschlagen, vor allem aber ein nachhaltiger Tourismus aufgebaut.

Teilweise kann man noch waschechte Gauchos bei der Arbeit mit Pferd und Hund sehen. Außer einem mürrischen Hallo kommt ihnen kaum ein Wort über die Lippen. Es sind eben Arbeiter und keine Schwatzer. Ihr Leben führen sie am liebsten im Sattel.

Hier auf der Carterra sind viele Fernradler aus aller Welt unterwegs. Teilweise traf ich 5 andere Radler an einem Tag. Teilweise grüßt man sich nur, jedoch hält man meist an und schnackt etwas miteinander, erfährt die neusten Straßengeschichten und manches mehr.

Von Villa o Higgins geht es nur per Fähre weiter, woran sich eine Wanderung und eine abermalige Fähre anschließt, ehe man in Argentinien wieder auf eine Straße trifft. Ein sehr besonderer Grenzübergang.

Nun geht es zu den berühmten Nationalparks Patagoniens.

My way from Cuhiayipi led further south on the Careterra Austra. to Villa O'Higgins.

The landscape became increasingly lonely, the villages futher apart and smaller. Food prices went up because of the long distances. The mountain peaks are now all covered with snow. With the current temperatures of 10-20 degrees and 14 hours of sunshine you can not imagine how tough the life is here with minus 20 degrees and 7 hours of light in winter times.

The villages here are so small that know all the inhabitants and the places are so remote that you have to stick together. In a small village named Tortel you onl argue about dogs that eats chickens. Then a compensation will be paid and the world is back on track.

Tortel was built 50 years ago as a lumberjack settlement at the end of a fjord. Instead of streets there is a network of wooden walkways, many stairs and almost everything is built of wood. Only the wholesalers grew rich through the export of timbe whereas the vilagers worked hard for little money. Today wood but especially sustainable tourism is the bigest source of income.

Still you can see truly Gauchos at work with horse and dog. Apart from a grumpy “Hello, como estas.” hardly a word come about their lips. There are just workers and not talkers. Their life is best in the saddle.

Here on the remote careterra many cyclists from around the world are on the move. Mostly I met 5 other cyclists on one day. Sometimes you just greet but mostly you stop for a while have some food and a good talk. Through this you get the newest road information and many stories.

To go to Argentinia from Villa o Higgins you have to take a ferry, than hike for about 12 km on a narrow path and than take another ferry. This is without a dout an adventurous boarder crossing.

Now it goes to the famous national parks of Patagonia.
