Brasilien

Brasilien:

Brazil:

From La Paz, I went downhill until the steaming Yungas, there continued to Trinidad, where I wanted to take a boat to Brazil, unfortunately there was no boat in the foreseeable future, which is why I then made a 33-hour bus ride. From the border in Guayamari I crossed the river by boat and then cycled to Puerto Viejo, from where I took a boat to Manaus, from where I finally flew at 07/05 to Madrid to begin my long journey home.

After the rather poor Bolivia it was a huge step to the developed country Brazil. There were again supermarkets where you could buy everything, the motorcyclists wore helmets again and almost all the roads were paved and signposted. The traffic was not only trucks, but also passenger cars.

Once in Bolivia much forest had been cut down and converted to pastures, this was along the road in Brazil almost throughout the case. So I cycled in sultry heat straight through pastures, where there was a fence on the left and right of the road.

The only advantage of this almost monotonous landscape was that mosquitoes, from which I suffered in Bolivia, were due to large-scale deforestation whittled away. The best way to avoid them was to shower at 5 pm, then take a long dress and go on till 8 pm into deep darkness and finall quickly set up the tent and never leaf it again until the next morning. So I bypassed the most active hour of the mosquitoes and was only occasionally stung.

A poor man, whom I met on a lonely road in Bolivia gave me as wisdom for the journey that all people come to the same heaven or hell, no matter how much money they have accumulated. It just depends on to live well to come to the heaven.

The food in Brazil was very rich in meat. For breakfast there was "Cafe de la manana" a cup of coffee with lots of sugar, then later grilled cuts of beef, noon rice with chicken or beef and then for dinner again a large piece of beef. That was overwelming for me especially in the morning. So I bought my oatmeal and fruit and thus bridged half the day without meat.

In Brazil, many women used lots of make up. Even during the boat trip they dressed up propperl and had a hole bag full of make up. Even the elderly ladies did this. A bright red lipstick was there the least. In the cities there are a lot of clothing stores that are often visited. Who has some money immediately buys better clothes. How do I with surprise found you could even pay flipflops in installments.

The boat ride was very easy to get. At the port there was a boat that should set off the next day and transported bananas, rice and sugar along with about 40 passengers. The three-day trip cost 50 euros and then I even bought a large hammock for 12 Euro. On the passenger deck hammocks hung at the exit close together, so that one night slightly collided in light winds. In addition to that many passengers started to drink beer and watched football at nine and not even to mention the same 10 songs in endless loop. That was exhausting.

But the Aras river dolphins balanced the uncomfortable ride again. Once I even saw a dolphin jumping out of the brown water. Otherwise, there was quite a lot of peace to read a book.

Environmental awareness is promoted by the state but it has still not arrived in the peoples mind. So there are plenty of signs that deforestation is a crime or that one should avoid creating waste and separate it. But still deforestation is happenng and waste is simply thrown overboard without hesitation.

Shortly before departuring of the boat came the police heavily armed on board and searched the boat systematically. They said that they were looking for drugs. This is probably something everyday in Porto Veloh, anyway, it suggested no passenger on. But when they found 2 suitcase full of cocaine owned by a 19 year old guy the people looked but suddenly. It hard to see how much the society is used to crimes in Brasil.

Now I'm back in Europe and wonder and delight of the good life here.
